It might be taking a classic like a Manhattan and using Tequila instead of Bourbon?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Before I get in to the meat of this post I have an admission to make.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m a chile head.\u00c2\u00a0 There, I&#8217;ve said it.\u00c2\u00a0 If it&#8217;s tasty, chances are I&#8217;ve seriously contemplated whether it could be made more tasty with the addition of some kind of chile.\u00c2\u00a0 Green chili?\u00c2\u00a0 You better believe that&#8217;s better with more heat.\u00c2\u00a0 Camembert on french bread?\u00c2\u00a0 You know what makes that better?\u00c2\u00a0 A little peach habanero jam.\u00c2\u00a0 So why not cocktails?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not alone in my pondering of fiery libations.\u00c2\u00a0 When I decided I wanted to craft my own bitters I started looking for recipes and stumbled upon Charles Baker&#8217;s recipe for Hellfire Bitters, kindly posted <a title=\"eGullet - Hellfire Bitters\" href=\"http:\/\/forums.egullet.org\/index.php?showtopic=25061&amp;st=90&amp;p=1054590&amp;#entry1054590\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> by <a title=\"Underhill Lounge\" href=\"http:\/\/underhill-lounge.flannestad.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Erik Ellestad<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Now we were starting to talk my language.\u00c2\u00a0 I whipped up a batch and have since been applying them, carefully mind you, to some cocktails with varied results.\u00c2\u00a0 Check back later this week for my modified recipe and the results.<\/p>\n<p>As for cocktails, I&#8217;ve found these bitters work particularly well in a <a title=\"CH - Demon Blood Margarita\" href=\"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/?p=526\" target=\"_blank\">Margarita<\/a> or in the case of this week a Daiquiri.\u00c2\u00a0 The topic of <a title=\"TDN\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.mixoloseum.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Thursday Drink Night<\/a> (TDN) this past week was Mount Gay Extra Old and since I seriously love a nice daiquiri I decided that would be the starting point for my submission.\u00c2\u00a0 I had something come up and didn&#8217;t get a chance to offer my submission on Thursday but it really did turn out tasty and works great for this MxMo, so here you go.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"flickr-image aligncenter\" title=\"Fire Island Daiquiri\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/86318258@N00\/3434309471\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3656\/3434309471_e3e914ca39.jpg\" alt=\"Fire Island Daiquiri\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<pre><strong>Fire Island Daiquiri<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>2 oz Rum\r\n1 oz Lime Juice\r\n1\/4 oz Simple Syrup\r\n1\/4 oz Grenadine\r\n2-3 Dashes of Hellfire Bitters<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1) Combine ingredients in a shaker over ice\r\n2) Shake until well chilled (~30 seconds)\r\n3) Strain and serve up or on the rocks<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>Some quick comments.\u00c2\u00a0 First, my original batch of hellfire bitters are a little weaker than I would like so I use more like five dashes.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ve got a second batch brewing though that should remedy this problem nicely.\u00c2\u00a0 Which brings my to my second point.\u00c2\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t have hellfire bitters laying around you could easily mix this drink without them.\u00c2\u00a0 The grenadine adds a nice subtle fruit flavor and makes the drink nicely colorful (or is that colourful ;).\u00c2\u00a0 Third, use whatever rum you&#8217;d normally use for a daiquiri.\u00c2\u00a0 You certainly know your tastes better than I do.\u00c2\u00a0 That said, the Mount Gay Extra Old is crazy delicious and worked wonderfully in this cocktail, albeit a bit extravagent.\u00c2\u00a0 Finally, I like this drink served on the rocks as it increases the water content which can mellow the heat if need be.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This month&#8217;s Mixology Monday is being hosted by Tristan at the Wild Drink Blog.\u00c2\u00a0 Thanks in advance Tristan!\u00c2\u00a0 This month MxMo takes a look at twists on the classics.
