An iconoclast<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sxc.hu\/profile\/johnridley\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-865\" title=\"No Parking Sign by John Ridley\" src=\"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/noparking-500.jpg\" alt=\"noparking-500\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Per wikitionary the word scofflaw was coined as a\u00c2\u00a0 response to a content during prohibition times.\u00c2\u00a0 The contest was in search of, Jeopardy style, a word meaning &#8220;a lawless drinker of illegally made or illegally obtained liquor&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 The contest offered $200 as the prize and received nearly 25,000 <a title=\"World Wide Words - Scofflaw\" href=\"http:\/\/www.worldwidewords.org\/weirdwords\/ww-sco2.htm\" target=\"_blank\">entries<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Not particularly surprising considering that would buy you about 100 pints of alcohol if you could find a bootlegger to sell you some.<\/p>\n<p>The cocktail is clearly named after this newly coined word and, per Gary Regan, the cocktail was created in 1924 by Jock, a bartender at Harry&#8217;s New York Bar in Paris.<\/p>\n<pre><strong>Scofflaw (Joy of Mixology)<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>2 oz Bourbon or Straight Rye\r\n1 oz Dry Vermouth\r\n1\/2 oz Lemon Juice<\/strong><strong>\r\n1\/4 oz Grenadine\r\nOrange Bitters to Taste<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1) Combine ingredients in a shaker over ice.\r\n2) Shake until chilled and strain in to a cocktail glass.<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>I&#8217;m excited about this cocktail for a number of reasons.\u00c2\u00a0 First, it gives me the opportunity to make some more homemade grenadine.\u00c2\u00a0 Sure, I still have some left in my fridge and freezer, but since pomegranates are in season right now I can do it right this go round.\u00c2\u00a0 Second, I&#8217;m going to pick up a bottle of Noilly Prat dry vermouth.\u00c2\u00a0 This may not seem particularly exiciting, but <a title=\"Noilly Prat - Original Formula Re-release\" href=\"http:\/\/www.noillyprat.com\/default.aspx#navigationPath=Enjoy.ReturnOfTheClassicBlend&amp;commandIndex=0\" target=\"_blank\">Noilly Prat<\/a> has recently re-released their original dry vermouth formula for the US market and I&#8217;ve been looking forward to giving it a try.\u00c2\u00a0 Finally, it&#8217;s a bourbon cocktail and it seems like it has been much too long since I featured one.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>scofflaw 1.
