{"id":841,"date":"2009-02-02T10:17:08","date_gmt":"2009-02-02T17:17:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/?p=841"},"modified":"2009-02-01T10:59:23","modified_gmt":"2009-02-01T17:59:23","slug":"the-aviation-now-with-violette","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/?p=841","title":{"rendered":"The Aviation &#8211; Now with Violette"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My bottle of Creme de Violette finally arrived from Sam&#8217;s Wine last Tuesday.\u00c2\u00a0 I eagerly opened the box and pulled out a bottle of lovely violet colored spirit.\u00c2\u00a0 The beautiful color is the first and most striking thing you&#8217;ll notice about a bottle of Creme de Violette.\u00c2\u00a0 I admired for only a short time though before I had to break the seal and sample.\u00c2\u00a0 The smell, and not surprisingly the flavor, are distinctly floral.\u00c2\u00a0 This is a medium sweet liqueur, a little less sweet than Cointreau for comparison sake.\u00c2\u00a0 Ok, so enough about the Creme de Violette, you&#8217;re here to find out what impact it has on the Aviation.\u00c2\u00a0 Quite a lot I must say.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"flickr-image\" title=\"Aviation with Creme de Violette\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/86318258@N00\/3238378154\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3107\/3238378154_53656f50c8.jpg\" alt=\"Aviation with Creme de Violette\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I started off with <a title=\"Underhill Lounge - Aviation\" href=\"http:\/\/underhill-lounge.flannestad.com\/2008\/02\/24\/aviation-cocktail\/\" target=\"_blank\">Erik Ellestad&#8217;s<\/a> approximation of the original recipe.\u00c2\u00a0 The resulting Aviation is much less sweet than some of the other recipes that I&#8217;ve tried, but at the same time not overly sour which is interesting.\u00c2\u00a0 In other recipes as the sweetness decreased the drink became quite a lot more sour.\u00c2\u00a0 I think this flavor profile is a direct result of the addition of a small bit of simple syrup.\u00c2\u00a0 My big gripe about this recipe was that the flavor of the Maraschino and Creme de Violette were not as present as I would like.<\/p>\n<pre><strong>Aviation (Erik Ellestad)<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>3\/4 oz Lemon Juice\r\n1 1\/2 oz Plymouth Gin\r\n2 Dashes Maraschino (~1\/2 tsp)\r\n1\/2 tsp Creme de Violette\r\n1\/2 tsp Rich Simple Syrup<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>So, on the tasting continued with a modification of my prefered non-Violette recipe.\u00c2\u00a0 I found that the Violette added an entirely new level of complexity in the flavor profile of this drink.\u00c2\u00a0 The result was nicely floral and exceedingly pleasing.\u00c2\u00a0 In addition the color of this recipe was absolutely gorgeous.\u00c2\u00a0 As you can see from the picture above the color is a light violet color that you rarely see in cocktails.\u00c2\u00a0 Still wasn&#8217;t exactly what I was looking for though.<\/p>\n<pre><strong>Aviation (Mod of Dan's Recipe)<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>2 oz Gin\r\n1 oz Lemon Juice\r\n1\/4 oz Maraschino\r\n1\/4 oz Creme de Violette\r\nTouch of Simple Syrup<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>I next turned to the second recipe list in Diffords Guide #7.\u00c2\u00a0 This recipe upped the Violette to 1\/2 oz which sounded appealing but lowered the lemon juice to only 1\/2 oz as well.\u00c2\u00a0 As with the others the color is very striking, really in love with the look of this cocktail.\u00c2\u00a0 The aroma of the Violette comes through very nicely.\u00c2\u00a0 Although the Violette is the primary background flavor the Maraschino is still there as well.\u00c2\u00a0 This recipe has the perfect level of sweetness in my mind but due to the cut in the lemon juice the sourness isn&#8217;t where I&#8217;d like.<\/p>\n<pre><strong>Aviation (Diffords #2 -
