{"id":775,"date":"2009-01-18T22:26:46","date_gmt":"2009-01-19T05:26:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/?p=775"},"modified":"2009-01-18T22:26:46","modified_gmt":"2009-01-19T05:26:46","slug":"the-aviation-cocktail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/?p=775","title":{"rendered":"The Aviation Cocktail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Aviation is a classic cocktail that now lives a life of relative web 2.0 anonymity.\u00c2\u00a0 A search on Wikipedia will link you directly to the general cocktail page, which doesn&#8217;t do anyone much good as the page doesn&#8217;t even list a recipe.\u00c2\u00a0 Thankfully my reference books had a few recipes and my fellow cocktail bloggers have done their experiments as well so I have a good starting point for the week.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-776\" title=\"Wright Flyer\" src=\"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/wrightflyer-500.jpg\" alt=\"Wright Flyer\" width=\"500\" height=\"360\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The first recipe for the Aviation to see print was in Hugo Ensslin&#8217;s book <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Recipes for Mixed Drinks<\/span> printed in 1916.\u00c2\u00a0 I, sadly, do not have a copy, but Erik came to the rescue by posting the recipe on <a title=\"Underhill Lounge - Aviation\" href=\"http:\/\/underhill-lounge.flannestad.com\/2008\/02\/24\/aviation-cocktail\/\" target=\"_blank\">his site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<pre><strong>Aviation Cocktail (Original Recipe)<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1\/3 Lemon Juice\r\n2\/3 El Bart Gin\r\n2 Dashes Maraschino\r\n2 Dashes Creme de Violette<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Shake well in a mixing glass with cracked ice, strain and serve.<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>Now, I&#8217;m guessing the first thing that popped in to your head is &#8220;What the hell is El Bart Gin?&#8221; I know it was certainly the first thing in mine.\u00c2\u00a0 From what I can best ascertain its a long gone brand of Dry Gin.\u00c2\u00a0 About all that can be found on the net these days about it is sales of new tin signs and news about the sale of a mint condition antique sign that went for <a title=\"Antique El-Bart Gin Sign\" href=\"http:\/\/antiques-collectibles-auction-news.com\/2008\/04\/22\/extremely-rare-el-bart-dry-gin-tin-advertising-sign-realizes-60500-at-sale-of-the-george-cross-collection\/\" target=\"_blank\">$60,500 at auction<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 I think its safe to assume though that El-Bart was one of Ensslin&#8217;s favorite gins as it is called for in some of his <a title=\"WebTender - Alexander\" href=\"http:\/\/wiki.webtender.com\/wiki\/Alexander\" target=\"_blank\">other<\/a> <a title=\"WebTender - Old Fashioned (Gin)\" href=\"http:\/\/wiki.webtender.com\/wiki\/Old_Fashioned_Recipes#Recipes_for_Mixed_Drinks_by_Hugo_R._Ensslin_.28of_New_York.27s_Wallick_Hotel.29_.281916-1917.29\" target=\"_blank\">recipes<\/a> as well.\u00c2\u00a0 Following that my second question was in reference to just what exactly Creme de Violette is.\u00c2\u00a0 In doing a bit of reading in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1840924748?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=cockthacke-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1840924748\">Vintage Cocktails and Spirits<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=cockthacke-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1840924748\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/> and <a title=\"Wikipedia - Creme de Violette\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Creme_de_violette\" target=\"_blank\">online<\/a> I had my answer.\u00c2\u00a0 Creme de Violette is the name given to a group of French liqueurs whos main source of flavoring and coloring is violets.<\/p>\n<p>Creme de Violette is a touch hard to find in some areas in the US as there is only one importer (<a title=\"Haus Alpenz\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alpenz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Haus Alpenz<\/a>), and one brand being imported (<a title=\"Haus Alpenz - Creme de Violette\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alpenz.com\/images\/poftfolio\/violettefacts.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Rothman &amp; Winter<\/a>).\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ve checked one local liquor store, but no luck there.\u00c2\u00a0 I plan to do some more extensive searching tomorrow.\u00c2\u00a0 An interesting note is that due to the relative scarcity of this liqueur in the US most modern recipes you&#8217;ll find don&#8217;t list it as an ingredient at all.\u00c2\u00a0 For example below is Regan&#8217;s recipe from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0609608843?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=cockthacke-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0609608843\">The Joy of Mixology<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none !important;
