favorite cocktail, The Martini.\u00c2\u00a0 Now, at this point, I should mention that in the books James&#8217; cocktail of choice is not, in fact, a Vodka Martini, Shaken, not Stirred, but a Vesper or <a title=\"007 Cocktails\" href=\"http:\/\/www.atomicmartinis.com\/007\/recipes.htm\" target=\"_blank\">one of a number of other cocktails<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 However, since Smirnoff sponsored the filming of &#8220;Dr. No&#8221; in 1962 Bond has been drinking Vodka Martinis ever since.\u00c2\u00a0 Now, I&#8217;ll grant you that there is nothing wrong with a Vodka Martini and you can even shake it if you really want, but don&#8217;t confuse this drink with a Martini.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-53\" title=\"martini-with-olives\" src=\"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/martini-with-olives.jpg\" alt=\"Cold Martini with Olives\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/martini-with-olives.jpg 640w, https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/martini-with-olives-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Martini&#8217;s began their life in Califorinia near the turn of the 19th century.\u00c2\u00a0 Thought to be a derivative of the <a title=\"Matini Cocktail on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martini_(cocktail)#History_of_the_drink\" target=\"_blank\">Martinez<\/a>, the Martini as it was then is considerably different that what you&#8217;ll find today.\u00c2\u00a0 William Boothby&#8217;s recipe from his 1908 version of the book &#8220;<a title=\"Flickr Set of the Book\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/dinah\/sets\/72157603645295415\/\" target=\"_blank\">The World&#8217;s Drinks and How to Mix Them<\/a>&#8221; is one of the first known recipes for the Dry Martini.<\/p>\n<pre><strong><a title=\"Martini Recipe in Boothby's Book\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/dinah\/2169879210\/sizes\/l\/in\/set-72157603645295415\/\" target=\"_blank\">Boothby's Dry Martini Cocktail<\/a><\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre><strong>[Ingredients]<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1\/2 Jigger Gin<\/strong><strong>\r\n1\/2 Jigger Vermouth\r\n2 Dashes Orange Bitters<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre><strong>[Directions]<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1) Combine ingredients over ice<\/strong><strong>\r\n2) Stir well until thoroughly chilled\r\n3) Strain into a chilled cocktail glass\r\n4) Squeeze a piece of lemon peel over the top and serve with an olive<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>This recipe mixes the Vermouth and Gin half and half resulting in a very Vermouth heavy cocktail.\u00c2\u00a0 Once Embury&#8217;s book rolls around you&#8217;ll note that the Vermouth has been reduced drastically.\u00c2\u00a0 Embury lists a number of recipe variations for the Dry Martini in his book but lists the Martini De Luxe as his favorite which is much drier at a 7:1 ratio.<\/p>\n<pre><strong>Embury's Martini De Luxe<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre><strong>[Ingredients]<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1 3\/4 oz Gin<\/strong><strong>\r\n1\/4 oz Dry Vermouth\r\nTwist of Lemon<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre><strong>[Directions]<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1) Combine ingredients over ice<\/strong><strong>\r\n2) Stir to combine and chill thoroughly<\/strong><strong>\r\n3) Strain in to a chilled cocktail glass\r\n<\/strong><strong>4) Squeeze a twist of lemon over the drink to express the oils\r\n5) Garnish with an olive (Embury recommends nut stuffed olives if available)<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>Some points to consider when making this drink.\u00c2\u00a0 When combining the ingredients you should stir the cocktail to make a Martini.\u00c2\u00a0 If you choose to shake instead you are actually making a Bradford.\u00c2\u00a0 Garnish a Martini with an olive, or to mix it up garnish with a pickled onion, but make sure to call this creation a Gibson.<\/p>\n<p>After reading this far you&#8217;re probably wondering why most &#8220;Martinis&#8221; you get in a bar are made with Vodka rather than Gin.\u00c2\u00a0 The answer is fairly simple, Vodka has a less pronounced flavor which seems to appeal to people than Gin.\u00c2\u00a0 That said, please please please, do not call a Vodka Martini a Martini, it&#8217;s not.\u00c2\u00a0 And while I&#8217;m on a bit of a rant here let me request one more favor, just because you&#8217;re served (or serving) a cocktail in a cocktail (martini) glass, don&#8217;t feel the need to end it in <a title=\"Martini Variations\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martini_(cocktail)#Martini_variations\" target=\"_blank\">-tini<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 This just muddles the name of the Martini in people&#8217;s mind and they lose track of what a classic Dry Martini is all about.\u00c2\u00a0 Enough ranting, time for some drinking.<\/p>\n<p>The ingredients you&#8217;ll want to snag for this week are below.<\/p>\n<pre><strong>Ingredients:\r\n<\/strong><\/pre>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>Gin<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>Dry (French) Vermouth<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>Olives\r\n<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>Lemon<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You&#8217;ll also need a few basic tools which if you&#8217;ve been following along with us you likely have already.<\/p>\n<pre><strong>Tools:<\/strong><\/pre>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>Cocktail Shaker (Just the bottom half)<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>Strainer<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>Cocktail (Martini) Glass<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>Measuring Device (Jigger)<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>Bar Spoon (Or other stirring stick)<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We&#8217;ll report back throughout the week on our investigations and on Friday we&#8217;ll summarize our findings and our favorite recipe(s).\u00c2\u00a0 Until then, enjoy your Martinis or the plentiful variants.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Surely everyone living in the age of James Bond movies, and books, has heard of James&#8217;
