Tonic Syrup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a great <a title=\"eGullet Thread on Cocktail Geekery\" href=\"http:\/\/forums.egullet.org\/index.php?showtopic=89662&amp;pid=1225926&amp;mode=threaded&amp;show=&amp;st=&amp;\" target=\"_blank\">thread on eGullet<\/a> titled &#8220;You might be a cocktail snob\/geek if&#8230;&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 Well, tonight I can add another of my own.\u00c2\u00a0 You might be a cocktail geek if you make incredible homemade tonic syrup and immediately start thinking about what you can tweak to make it better.\u00c2\u00a0 Last night the cocktail hacker crew had a tonic tasting to coincide with our Gin and Tonic week.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ll be writing up our results tomorrow.\u00c2\u00a0 To go with this theme I made up a batch of homemade tonic syrup used the recipe posted by <a title=\"Homemade Tonic Guide\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jeffreymorgenthaler.com\/2008\/how-to-make-your-own-tonic-water\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeffrey Morgenthaler<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 This being the first time I had made Tonic Syrup I decided to stick with Jeffrey&#8217;s recipe nearly to the letter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/img_4662-1024.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-383 aligncenter\" title=\"Tonic Syrup Ingredients\" src=\"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/img_4662-1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/img_4662-1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/img_4662-1024-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Two of the ingredients required a bit of foot work to find.\u00c2\u00a0 I found citric acid at a local home brewing \/ wine making shop.\u00c2\u00a0 The clerk was a bit startled when I said I was making my own tonic and later added that citric acid is usually purchased for barrel cleaning.\u00c2\u00a0 His next question was where I got the quinine from.\u00c2\u00a0 At Jeffrey&#8217;s suggestion, and most of the homemade tonic recipes for that matter, I used powdered red cinchona bark that I got from <a title=\"ZooScape\" href=\"http:\/\/www.zooscape.com\" target=\"_blank\">www.zooscape.com<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 There are other online retailers as well, but ZooScape treated me well and I&#8217;d recommend them if you&#8217;re wanting to try this recipe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/img_4679-1024.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-384 aligncenter\" title=\"Tonic Syrup Simmering\" src=\"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/img_4679-1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/img_4679-1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/img_4679-1024-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once I had all the ingredient prepped we brought them all to a boil then lowered the burner and allowed the mixture to simmer for 20 minutes.\u00c2\u00a0 Following that we moved on to the straining process.\u00c2\u00a0 The first step to this is to use a mesh strainer to remove all the big pieces.\u00c2\u00a0 This step will also remove a lot of the bark powder, but you&#8217;ll still be left with quite a bit of particulate.\u00c2\u00a0 To solve that problem there are a couple of routes you can take.\u00c2\u00a0 The immediate choice is to run it all through a coffee filter.\u00c2\u00a0 This method, although a good one, takes an exceedingly long time.\u00c2\u00a0 We tried it for a bit, but I got impatient so I tried my favorite filtering method.\u00c2\u00a0 We broke out my tiny <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/search?ie=UTF8&amp;keywords=bodum%20french%20press&amp;tag=cockthacke-20&amp;index=blended&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\">Bodum French Press<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none !important;
