{"id":27,"date":"2008-06-27T15:54:49","date_gmt":"2008-06-27T22:54:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/?p=27"},"modified":"2008-06-27T14:57:04","modified_gmt":"2008-06-27T21:57:04","slug":"the-sidecar-a-week-in-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/?p=27","title":{"rendered":"The Sidecar &#8211; A Week in Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today marks the end of our first week here at CocktailHacker.com, a week of tasting, and experimenting with, one of my all-time favorite cocktails, the Sidecar.\u00c2\u00a0 Throughout the week, Reese and I have tested many different recipes, some of them exceptional, and some of them not so much.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href='http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/img_4065-1024.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/img_4065-1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"img_4065-1024\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/img_4065-1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/img_4065-1024-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of the many lessons we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve learned about the Sidecar this week, the most important, I think, and this is apparent to me only now as I review our tasting notes, the key to a good sidecar is equal parts Cointreau and lemon juice.\u00c2\u00a0 While the amount of brandy can vary significantly between recipes and still produce a very tasty cocktail, it seems that altering the balance of Cointreau and lemon has only a negative affect on the overall quality of the final drink.<\/p>\n<p>Also of note, as Reese and I imbibed cocktail after cocktail, it became clear that we were, in fact, each looking for a Sidecar with somewhat different qualities.\u00c2\u00a0 While my associate tended more toward the drier of the Sidecar recipes, my tastes ran more to the sweet.\u00c2\u00a0 After much debate, and several black eyes (I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll never be pretty again), we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve each decided to name a favorite recipe.<\/p>\n<p>Reese\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s preferred concoction places the brandy upfront and allows the sweet and sour components to mingle softly [ed note &#8211; We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re going to need to call a wordsmith from the wordsmithery to clean up this sentence] in the background:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>2 parts Cognac<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>1 part Cointreau<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>1 part Lemon Juice<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My preference was for the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153original\u00e2\u20ac\u009d recipe, calling for equal parts brandy, Cointreau, and lemon juice.\u00c2\u00a0 This recipe, while certainly not something to waste high quality Cognac on, provides a nice balance of flavors, and is also a good choice for those rare occasions when a person cannot be assured of their ingredients\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 quality:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>1 part Cognac<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>1 part Cointreau<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>1 part Lemon Juice<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Two of the other recipes we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve enjoyed this week:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Robert Hess' Sidecar\" href=\"http:\/\/www.smallscreennetwork.com\/video\/15\/sidecar\/\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Hess&#8217; recipe<\/a> which we both liked, but Reese found to be \u00e2\u20ac\u0153a little too poundable\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s like we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re from different planets, Reese and I):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>4 parts Cognac<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>2 parts Cointreau<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>1 part Lemon Juice<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And the Difford\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s, which places the Cognac way up front, but still maintains a balanced sweet and sour component:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>3 parts Cognac<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>1 part Cointreau<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>1 part Lemon Juice<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today marks the end of our first week here at CocktailHacker.com, a week of tasting, and experimenting with, one of my all-time favorite cocktails, the Sidecar.\u00c2\u00a0 Throughout the week, Reese and I have tested many different recipes, some of them exceptional, and some of them not so much.
