{"id":2116,"date":"2011-12-26T19:20:57","date_gmt":"2011-12-27T02:20:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/?p=2116"},"modified":"2011-12-26T19:20:57","modified_gmt":"2011-12-27T02:20:57","slug":"review-the-complete-idiots-guide-to-bartending","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/?p=2116","title":{"rendered":"Review &#8211; The Complete Idiot&#8217;s Guide to Bartending"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Today&#8217;s post is from my girlfriend and Cocktail Hacktress in training, Elisabeth.\u00c2\u00a0 She was excited to tackle this book as it&#8217;s a good intro to bartending and cocktail making in general.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Let\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s face it&#8211; Reese is far from an amateur when it comes to mixing drinks.\u00c2\u00a0 So when \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Complete Idiot\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Guide to Bartending, Second Edition\u00e2\u20ac\u009d was delivered to his house, it got passed to me.\u00c2\u00a0 I have learned a few things about cocktails over the past few months dating The Hacker, but took the time to refine my skills a little with some hands-on time.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Marie Antoinette by ReeseCLloyd, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/reeselloyd\/6287272670\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/farm7.staticflickr.com\/6108\/6287272670_51cf8a5bde.jpg\" alt=\"Marie Antoinette\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps most pleasing about this book is that you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t <em>feel<\/em> like an idiot when you read it.\u00c2\u00a0 Your first few chapters provide you the basics on everything you need to know to bartend like a champion.\u00c2\u00a0 There are brief introductions to the major types of liquor which are informative and brief.\u00c2\u00a0 There are a few quick recipes for basic ingredients like simple syrup, followed by a list of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153must haves\u00e2\u20ac\u009d for your home bar.\u00c2\u00a0 After a quick review of my own liquor cabinet, it became abundantly clear that I am not well stocked.\u00c2\u00a0 The \u00e2\u20ac\u0153basics\u00e2\u20ac\u009d however are fairly easy to obtain and even I can find decent vodka or white rum at the liquor store (hint: it is not the $4.99 special).\u00c2\u00a0 If your stash has a few more bottles than mine, there are two more extensive lists that you can use to fill out your bar, should this be your goal.\u00c2\u00a0 I found this section particularly useful because it will help anyone buy appropriate liquors depending on how serious they are about bartending.\u00c2\u00a0 If I wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t dating Reese (who is more than happy to fill out my stash when necessary), I would definitely stock up to cover the basics.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Reese and I perused the recipe sections.\u00c2\u00a0 These are grouped by liquor type (which I find to be useful with a limited bar).\u00c2\u00a0 All recipes I consider to be staples are covered in the book\u00e2\u20ac\u201dthese are the ones we all know enough about to order at a bar.\u00c2\u00a0 There are also some you probably don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t order, giving you many options for mixing up something delicious for friends and families.\u00c2\u00a0 Reese appreciates that the recipes use real juices versus something like sour mix.\u00c2\u00a0 Most of the classic cocktails are recipes he would mix up and are sized appropriately for his taste.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, <a title=\"Amazon - Complete Idiot's Guide to Bartending\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Complete-Idiots-Guide-Bartending-2nd\/dp\/1615640444\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Complete Idiot\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Guide to Bartending<\/a> is a good, complete intro to bartending.\u00c2\u00a0 If you got a cocktail shaker from Santa, you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll definitely want to buy this book.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a0 The product reviewed here was provided to me as a free sample.
