It’s raining outside.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s been cold all day.\u00c2\u00a0 There is a dusting of snow of the mountains.\u00c2\u00a0 Fall has officially arrived in Colorado and I’m loving it.\u00c2\u00a0 For me, with fall comes a desire for things dense, comforting and likely unhealthy.\u00c2\u00a0 So, naturally I chose a punch for this week’s cocktail.\u00c2\u00a0 It’s not a punch like you’d think, though.\u00c2\u00a0 There’s no fruit, no bubbles, and milk.\u00c2\u00a0 Yes, milk.\u00c2\u00a0 Looking at the recipe it should really be thought of as more similar to eggnog than the punches we’re most used to.<\/p>\n

With that, a recipe.<\/p>\n

Milk Punch (Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails)<\/strong><\/pre>\n
1 oz Brandy\r\n1\/2 oz Dark Rum\r\n2 tsp Simple Syrup\r\n2 dashes Vanilla Extract\r\n4 oz Whole Milk<\/strong><\/pre>\n
1) Combine in a shaker with ice\r\n2) Shake and strain into a shaved ice filled glass\r\n3) Top with nutmeg<\/strong><\/pre>\n
Interesting thing about this recipe is that, despite it being from a book called “Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails”, it’s not really forgotten or vintage.\u00c2\u00a0 This recipe is more akin to what’s currently served in New Orleans as a brunch pick me up.\u00c2\u00a0 Dr. Cocktail mentions that the original recipe included dark rum but no vanilla extract.\u00c2\u00a0 The rum giving the drink a touch of vanilla flavor.\u00c2\u00a0 So, one thing I plan to do is to track down a truly classic recipe and give that a try as well.<\/p>\n
