A Cocktail Mashup?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Are you familiar with the idea of a mashup in music terms?\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s when you combine elements of one song with elements of another and the result is a new, hybrid song.\u00c2\u00a0 There are tons of examples, but here&#8217;s one of my favorites to get you started, &#8220;<a title=\"Galvanize the Empire\" href=\"http:\/\/www.partyben.com\/PartyBen-GalvanizetheEmpire.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">Galvanize the Empire<\/a>&#8221; by Party Ben.\u00c2\u00a0 With me now?\u00c2\u00a0 The Derby is what I would imagine the cocktail equivalent of a mashup would be.\u00c2\u00a0 Bourbon and sweet vermouth from a <a title=\"CH - Manhattan\" href=\"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/?p=92\" target=\"_blank\">Manhattan<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Sourness and sweet from a <a title=\"CH - Whiskey Sour\" href=\"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/?p=330\" target=\"_blank\">Whiskey Sour<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Combine all these elements and you have the Derby.\u00c2\u00a0 And, like all good mashups, this one is harmonious and stands on its own.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"The Derby by ReeseCLloyd, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/reeselloyd\/4549240863\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4059\/4549240863_31ec54816e.jpg\" alt=\"The Derby\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Before I discuss the taste at length, let&#8217;s briefly talk about the changes I felt were necessary.\u00c2\u00a0 First, this drink as printed in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails<\/span> is tiny.\u00c2\u00a0 I get that old school drinks were typically smaller than what you&#8217;ll find these days, but this one is tiny even by those standards.\u00c2\u00a0 So, I bumped everything up by half and I&#8217;m much happier.\u00c2\u00a0 Next the lime in the recipe overpowered the other ingredients a little.\u00c2\u00a0 So, when I did my quantity increasing I didn&#8217;t increase that one as much, though it&#8217;s a pretty minor decrease.\u00c2\u00a0 Ok, now let&#8217;s talk tastiness.<\/p>\n<pre><strong>The Derby (Cocktail Hacker)<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1 1\/2 oz Bourbon\r\n3\/4 oz Lime Juice\r\n3\/4 oz Sweet Vermouth\r\n3\/4 oz Orange Curacao\r\n<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1) Combine ingredients in a shaker over ice\r\n2) Shake until combined and well chilled\r\n3) Strain into a chilled cocktail glass<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>Although I stick by my claim of a mashup, the flavor of this drink is definitely more in line with a Whiskey Sour.\u00c2\u00a0 Though, instead of bitters to add complexity here you have vermouth.\u00c2\u00a0 Certainly they add complexity and spice, but it isn&#8217;t as forward and bold as bitters can be.\u00c2\u00a0 Instead the sweet vermouth adds an undercurrent of flavor complexity.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;d challenge you to tell me it was there without knowing, but the drink would be much flatter without it.\u00c2\u00a0 The lime juice as well changes up the flavor dynamic.\u00c2\u00a0 Ever made a Daiquiri with lemon instead of lime juice?\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a lot like that.\u00c2\u00a0 Finally, with my small tweak to the sourness level I find this drink to be really well balanced.\u00c2\u00a0 Overall this is definitely a super tasty cocktail.\u00c2\u00a0 You absolutely shouldn&#8217;t wait for <a title=\"The Kentucky Derby\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kentuckyderby.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Derby<\/a> to give it a try.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are you familiar with the idea of a mashup in music terms?\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s when you combine elements of one song with elements of another and the result is a new, hybrid song.\u00c2\u00a0 There are tons of examples, but here&#8217;s one of my favorites to get you started, &#8220;Galvanize the Empire&#8221;
