The Bartenders Got it Right"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s no doubt that the lawmakers got a lot of things wrong during Prohibition.\u00c2\u00a0 The bartenders, on the other hand, were right.\u00c2\u00a0 The Twelve Mile Limit definitely exemplifies that statement.\u00c2\u00a0 The drink is well balanced, extremely flavorful and, overall, tremendously pleasing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Twelve Mile Limit by ReeseCLloyd, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/reeselloyd\/4449883038\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2742\/4449883038_86fc8b4711.jpg\" alt=\"Twelve Mile Limit\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this week&#8217;s picture I decided to share a bit of my insanity in the form of my cocktail notebook with you.\u00c2\u00a0 So, on that note (pun fully intended), I&#8217;m going to let my notes do some talking about this drink.\u00c2\u00a0 &#8220;First off, the color is incredible, a deep burgundy red.\u00c2\u00a0 Really looks very regal.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 And that it absolutely does.\u00c2\u00a0 This drink uses a lot of grenadine, at least in comparison to the amount you typically see in cocktails.\u00c2\u00a0 I, of course, reached for my homemade hibiscus grenadine.\u00c2\u00a0 The result is a deep red that is truly striking.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The aroma bears the rye and brandy very nicely.\u00c2\u00a0 The rum is a bit lost however.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 Again, very true.\u00c2\u00a0 Though I think there are a couple reasons for the rum getting a bit lost.\u00c2\u00a0 First, the rum I picked at first (Flor de Ca\u00c3\u00b1a) is very smooth, but also quite light.\u00c2\u00a0 This drink definitely needs a bit more boldness.\u00c2\u00a0 So, to change it up I tried Wray and Nephew Overproof for the next mix.\u00c2\u00a0 Wrong answer.\u00c2\u00a0 The alcohol flavor was much too bold.\u00c2\u00a0 For try number three I reached for a rum<a title=\"Rum Dood - Twelve Mile Limit\" href=\"http:\/\/rumdood.com\/2010\/02\/01\/twelve-mile-limit\/\" target=\"_blank\"> recommended by Rum Dood<\/a> for this drink, <a title=\"Rum Dood - Montanya Platino\" href=\"http:\/\/rumdood.com\/2010\/03\/11\/rum-review-montanya-platino\/\" target=\"_blank\">Montanya Platino<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 The fact that Montanya is a Colorado rum is just icing on the cake.\u00c2\u00a0 The Dood was definitely right, this is a great rum for this drink.\u00c2\u00a0 Though it was still a light for my tastes.\u00c2\u00a0 So, let&#8217;s talk about that second point.\u00c2\u00a0 I think the rum can be bumped up a bit.\u00c2\u00a0 For my preferred recipe (below) I increase the rum to 1 1\/2 oz which brings its flavor more to the forefront.<\/p>\n<pre><strong>Twelve Mile Limit (Cocktail Hacker)<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1 1\/2 oz White Rum (Go Bold)\r\n1\/2 oz Brandy\r\n1\/2 oz Rye\r\n1\/2 oz Grenadine\r\n1\/2 oz Lemon Juice<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1) Combine ingredients in a shaker over ice\r\n2) Shake until combined and well chilled\r\n3) Strain into a chilled cocktail glass<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>A couple quick notes on this recipe.\u00c2\u00a0 First, by adding more rum I&#8217;ve pumped the alcohol content up to 2 1\/2 oz.\u00c2\u00a0 That puts this drink solidly into the formidable foe category.\u00c2\u00a0 So, like most formidable foes, be cautious in your consumption.\u00c2\u00a0 Second, that extra 1\/2 oz also lessens the depth of the red color a bit.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m okay with that.\u00c2\u00a0 Adding more grenadine is an option, but I&#8217;d rather not have that additional sweetness, so I go without.<\/p>\n<p>A final bit of discussion, the Three Mil(l)er.\u00c2\u00a0 I tried it and I&#8217;d like to call shenanigans on myself.\u00c2\u00a0 This drink is certainly related to the Twelve Mile Limit and it may have come before, but the relationship is more that of an older cousin than a parent.\u00c2\u00a0 I mixed up the Three Miller recipe from the Savoy.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s much drier than the Twelve Mile Limit, but that&#8217;s to be expected since the only sweetener is 1 tsp of grenadine compared to 3.\u00c2\u00a0 The lemon juice flavor is really only an accent; at 1 dash you don&#8217;t even pick up the sourness.\u00c2\u00a0 Lastly, with 1 1\/2 oz of brandy and 3\/4 oz of rum this drink is all about the brandy.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s the center of the aroma and the flavor.\u00c2\u00a0 So, while related to the Twelve Mile Limit, this drink is a completely different beast.\u00c2\u00a0 Still worth trying though.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s no doubt that the lawmakers got a lot of things wrong during Prohibition.\u00c2\u00a0 The bartenders, on the other hand, were right.\u00c2\u00a0 The Twelve Mile Limit definitely exemplifies that statement.\u00c2\u00a0 The drink is well balanced, extremely flavorful and, overall, tremendously pleasing.
