{"id":1288,"date":"2009-12-09T21:06:28","date_gmt":"2009-12-10T04:06:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/?p=1288"},"modified":"2009-12-10T10:57:53","modified_gmt":"2009-12-10T17:57:53","slug":"tiki-in-december-fog-cutter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/?p=1288","title":{"rendered":"Tiki in December &#8211; Fog Cutter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Calling this drink a Fog Cutter is a grand misnomer.\u00c2\u00a0 Much better thought of as a fog maker.\u00c2\u00a0 In Grog Log, Beachbum Berry has a great quote from Trader Vic that sums up his creation nicely.\u00c2\u00a0 &#8220;Fog Cutter, hell.\u00c2\u00a0 After two of these, you won&#8217;t even see the stuff.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 To give you a hint of why this is the case let&#8217;s take a peek at the recipe to get us going.<\/p>\n<pre><strong>Fog Cutter (Grog Log)<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>2 oz Lemon Juice\r\n1 oz Orange Juice\r\n1\/2 oz Orgeat\r\n2 oz Light Rum\r\n1 oz Brandy\r\n1\/2 oz Gin\r\n1\/2 oz Sweet Sherry<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1) Combine the ingredients (except sherry) in a shaker\r\n2) Shake with ice until well chilled\r\n3) Pour into a tiki mug\r\n4) Float sherry on top<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>If you take a look you&#8217;ll notice that there are 3 1\/2 oz of hard alcohol in this drink, 4 oz if you include the sherry.\u00c2\u00a0 See what I mean when I say fog maker?\u00c2\u00a0 After a couple of these and the fog settles in deep and wonderful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Fog Cutter by ReeseCLloyd, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/86318258@N00\/4170205961\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2707\/4170205961_9d05ecb6d9.jpg\" alt=\"Fog Cutter\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When I first mixed this drink my first comment was that this is another tart but delicious cocktail.\u00c2\u00a0 The sourness from the lemon was a little overwhelming.\u00c2\u00a0 After a little thought it occurred to me that maybe it wasn&#8217;t the recipe but rather my ingredients.\u00c2\u00a0 It would seem that my lemon juice this go-round is tarter than usual.\u00c2\u00a0 This is a nice segue into a good point I should make.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s always a good plan to give you cocktails a small taste before you shake and serve them.\u00c2\u00a0 This will give you an idea of whether your is mixed correctly.\u00c2\u00a0 For example perhaps your lemon juice is too tart.<\/p>\n<p>To really give this drink the review it deserves I mixed up another with only 1 1\/2 oz of lemon juice.\u00c2\u00a0 The resulting cocktail is much more balanced.\u00c2\u00a0 So, now that you know the drink is ~1\/2 hard alcohol, on tasting it you&#8217;d never guess.\u00c2\u00a0 The sherry really only comes through in the scent, which explains why the recipe calls for it to be\u00c2\u00a0 a float.\u00c2\u00a0 I don&#8217;t notice the gin in this drink but I used Junipero which isn&#8217;t a particularly strongly flavored example of the spirit.\u00c2\u00a0 The brandy and rum meld nicely to make a harmonious core flavor with the citrus and the orgeat adding a subtle background flavor.<\/p>\n<p>This is a great drink.\u00c2\u00a0 Whether you choose to mix it to cut your fog or perhaps deepen it a bit I&#8217;m certain you&#8217;ll be quite pleased with the results.<\/p>\n<p>[Note] There are some other cool pictures from this cocktail.\u00c2\u00a0 I even got to play with dry ice.\u00c2\u00a0 Check them out <a title=\"Flickr -
