{"id":1148,"date":"2009-08-30T12:14:53","date_gmt":"2009-08-30T19:14:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/?p=1148"},"modified":"2009-08-30T12:14:53","modified_gmt":"2009-08-30T19:14:53","slug":"gin-rickey-bout-time-i-wrapped-this-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/?p=1148","title":{"rendered":"Gin Rickey &#8211; &#8217;bout Time I Wrapped This Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve spent two weeks with the Gin Rickey and they&#8217;ve been a good couple weeks.\u00c2\u00a0 I mentioned last week that there were experiments I wanted to conduct.\u00c2\u00a0 The results are mixed, but I&#8217;m getting ahead of myself.\u00c2\u00a0 In Gary Regan&#8217;s writeup of the Rickey in The Joy of Mixology he mentioned that you could really use any clear base spirit that you like for this drink but gin is the most common.\u00c2\u00a0 This naturally got me thinking about what the Rickey would be like when paired with other bases.\u00c2\u00a0 So I broke out the collection and went to work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Gin Rickey by ReeseCLloyd, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/86318258@N00\/3869584126\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3471\/3869584126_4ec7de4f1d.jpg\" alt=\"Gin Rickey\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I think the most interesting thing I found from all of the experiments was that no matter the base spirit (gin excepted) I always found myself wanting a different cocktail that was only a slight change from the Rickey.\u00c2\u00a0 Now for some results.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rum [Flor De Cana Extra Dry]<\/strong> &#8211; This variant has a slight sweetness from the rum but the overall flavor is much less complex.\u00c2\u00a0 Still a very dry drink.\u00c2\u00a0 (Preferred Drink &#8211; <a title=\"CH - Daiquiri\" href=\"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/?p=40\">Daiquiri<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tequila [Milagro Silver]<\/strong> &#8211; No sweetness here, very dry.\u00c2\u00a0 An interesting Margarita like aroma (not surprisingly).\u00c2\u00a0 This variant actually works pretty well, I&#8217;d even consider drinking this one again.\u00c2\u00a0 (Preferred Drink &#8211; <a title=\"CH - Margarita\" href=\"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/?p=409\" target=\"_blank\">Margarita<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pisco [Montesierpe]<\/strong> &#8211; Not really an outright bad drink.\u00c2\u00a0 I was worried about this one as I mixed it.\u00c2\u00a0 I had visions of fail dancing through my head.\u00c2\u00a0 Flavors actually work out pretty well though, although it&#8217;s not something I&#8217;ll be reaching for in the foreseeable future. (Preferred Drink &#8211; <a title=\"CH - Pisco Sour\" href=\"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/?p=921\" target=\"_blank\">Pisco Sour<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cachaca [Leblon]<\/strong> &#8211; Definitely not my favorite variant.\u00c2\u00a0 This one, like the rum, lacks depth and complexity in the flavor.
