Pepper and later brought to the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.<\/p>\n<p><center><figure id=\"attachment_110\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110\" style=\"width: 523px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/pendennis_club_c1906.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-110\" title=\"Pendennis Club Circa 1906\" src=\"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/pendennis_club_c1906.jpg\" alt=\"Pendennis Club Circa 1906\" width=\"523\" height=\"420\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-110\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pendennis Club Circa 1906<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The Old Fashioned is truly an exercise in elegance through simplicity.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s not to say that it doesn&#8217;t need to be crafted with just as much care as a more complex recipe.\u00c2\u00a0 <a title=\"Robert Hess' View of the Old Fashioned\" href=\"http:\/\/www.drinkboy.com\/Cocktails\/recipes\/OldFashioned.html\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Hess<\/a> explained it thus: &#8220;When properly made, this cocktail can represent the pinnacle of the bartenders trade. When done improperly, which is more often the case, it can be a disaster of mediocrity.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 Robert also has an incredible chronology of the Old Fashioned at <a title=\"Old Fashioned Chronology\" href=\"http:\/\/www.drinkboy.com\/Essays\/RenewingAnOldFashion.html\" target=\"_blank\">his site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Embury&#8217;s Recipe holds true to the first known recipe (see Robert&#8217;s site, linked above) but adds a speared Maraschino cherry as a garnish.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Pour into each glass 1 to 2 teaspoonfuls simple syrup and add 1 to 3 dashes Angostura. Stir with a spoon to blend the bitters with the syrup. Add about 1 oz. whisky and stir again. Add 2 large cubes of ice, cracked but not crushed (see page 100). Fill glass to within about 3\/8&#8243; of top with whisky and stir again. Add a twist of lemon and drop peel in the glass. Decorate with a maraschino cherry on a spear. Serve with short stir rod or Old-Fashioned spoon.&#8221; &#8211; David A. Embury, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Or in a more digestible format.<\/p>\n<pre><strong>Embury's Old Fashioned:<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre><strong>[Ingredients]<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>2 oz Whiskey\r\n1-2 tsp Simple Syrup\r\n1-3 Dashes Angostura Bitters<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre><strong>[Directions]<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1) Combine Syrup, Bitters and 1\/2 of the Whiskey in an Old Fashioned Glass\r\n2) Stir to combine\r\n3) Add two cubes of ice\r\n4) Add remaining whiskey and stir again to until cold\r\n5) Garnish with a twist of lemon and a maraschino cherry<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>This cocktail is the only one of Embury&#8217;s basic drinks that isn&#8217;t served in a cocktail (martini) glass.\u00c2\u00a0 Rather, it&#8217;s served in an Old Fashioned glass, named for the drink served within.\u00c2\u00a0 You can also use a small water\/juice glass in a pinch.\u00c2\u00a0 The key is to not use a glass that&#8217;s much larger than the volume of the cocktail, it won&#8217;t look quite right.<\/p>\n<p>After making the other cocktails we&#8217;ve covered you have all the ingredients you need, but here&#8217;s a quick run down.<\/p>\n<pre><strong>Ingredients:\r\n<\/strong><\/pre>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>Whiskey (Try a Bourbon)<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>Angostura Bitters<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>Maraschino Cherries<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>Lemon<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The tools you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll need are very simple.<\/p>\n<pre><strong>Tools:<\/strong><\/pre>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>Old Fashioned or Other Small Glass<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>Measuring Device (Jigger)<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<pre><strong>Bar Spoon (Or other stirring stick)<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Enjoy your Old Fashioned!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well we&#8217;ve reached the last of Embury&#8217;s Six Basic drinks, the Old Fashioned.\u00c2\u00a0 Per Wikipedia, the Old Fashioned is thought to have been created as a Bourbon Whiskey cocktail at the Pendennis Club in Louisville, KY.\u00c2\u00a0 Then popularized by distiller Colonel James E.
