{"id":1009,"date":"2009-05-23T09:24:19","date_gmt":"2009-05-23T16:24:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/?p=1009"},"modified":"2009-05-23T09:24:19","modified_gmt":"2009-05-23T16:24:19","slug":"cointreau-vs-hiram-walker-triple-sec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/?p=1009","title":{"rendered":"Cointreau vs. Hiram Walker Triple Sec"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few weeks ago I came home to find that the booze fairy had left me a delicious package in the form of Hiram Walker Triple Sec.\u00c2\u00a0 Also included in the box was a tiny bottle of Cointreau and the suggestion (challenge perhaps?) that I try them side by side.\u00c2\u00a0 Always being up for a good cocktail related experiment I kept it in mind and waited for the right time to do some experimentation.\u00c2\u00a0 This week was the perfect opportunity.\u00c2\u00a0 To get some other opinions I enlisted the help of my Mom and Stepdad as well.\u00c2\u00a0 We tried both liqueurs side by side, straight up to really get the true flavor.<\/p>\n<p>A bit of an editors note before we get too deep down the rabbit hole.\u00c2\u00a0 Cointreau is a triple sec, so the title of this post is a bit of a misnomer.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m not ready to detail all the different orange liqueur varieties just yet.\u00c2\u00a0 But, if you&#8217;re looking for more info take a look at <a title=\"eGullet - Orange Liqueurs\" href=\"http:\/\/forums.egullet.org\/index.php?showtopic=73859&amp;st=0\" target=\"_blank\">this thread on eGullet<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s long, but well worth the read if you&#8217;re interested in knowing the intricacies of triple sec, curacao, and brandy based orange liqueurs.\u00c2\u00a0 Okay, back to the task at hand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cointreau:<\/strong> At 80 proof this liqueur comes in a bit strong, but you don&#8217;t detect it much from the smell or taste.\u00c2\u00a0 The orange scent is sharp and reminiscent of orange peels.\u00c2\u00a0 On the palate you&#8217;ll find that both liqueurs are at about the same level of sweetness which is a plus because it makes it easier to interchange them in recipes.\u00c2\u00a0 I felt that the Cointreau had a slightly more intense and deep orange flavor but both my Mom and Stepdad were hard pressed to tell the difference.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hiram Walker Triple Sec:<\/strong> This triple sec comes in at 60 proof.\u00c2\u00a0 A bit lower than the Cointreau, but I don&#8217;t really have a problem with that.\u00c2\u00a0 The orange scent is still present but a bit more muted here.\u00c2\u00a0 The flavor follows suit.\u00c2\u00a0 It is very good, but lacks the intensity and depth found in the Cointreau.<\/p>\n<p>The final verdict is another time where I&#8217;ll veer from cocktail snobbery.\u00c2\u00a0 The Hiram Walker Triple Sec is very good.\u00c2\u00a0 I would not hesitate to use it when making cocktails for parties or other times when I&#8217;ll be using a lot.\u00c2\u00a0 The price difference is simply too attractive.\u00c2\u00a0 The HW Triple Sec rings in at $15-20 for a 750 where you&#8217;ll be paying $35-45 for same size Cointreau.<\/p>\n<p>The orange flavor in the HW, although very good, is a bit muted.\u00c2\u00a0 As such, when I&#8217;m mixing drinks for myself or a couple friends I&#8217;m always going to reach for the Cointreau.\u00c2\u00a0 The intensity and depth of flavor win hands down.\u00c2\u00a0 However, and you&#8217;re probably already thinking this, you could easily bump up the orange flavor in the HW with a couple dashes of orange bitters.\u00c2\u00a0 And that&#8217;s exactly what I would recommend you do.\u00c2\u00a0 The triple sec coinoseur might be able to tell the difference in a cocktail, but I highly doubt it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few weeks ago I came home to find that the booze fairy had left me a delicious package in the form of Hiram Walker Triple Sec.\u00c2\u00a0 Also included in the box was a tiny bottle of Cointreau and the suggestion (challenge perhaps?) that I try them side by side.\u00c2\u00a0 Always being up for a [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[36],"tags":[207,99],"class_list":["post-1009","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-review","tag-review","tag-triple-sec"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1009","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=1009"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1009\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1011,"href":"https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1009\/revisions\/1011"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=1009"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=1009"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/cocktailhacker.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=1009"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
